The different forms of sustainable fashion

There are many forms of sustainable fashion and since we all have different needs and preferences, all forms do not necessarily suit everybody equally well. This figure shows six forms of sustainable fashion from a consumer and producer perspective.

Secondhand & VintageBuying secondhand is a very affordable option to add high quality and designer pieces to your wardrobe. It is incredibly sustainable, as each piece gains years of life as it enters your closet without any additional energy or materials being wasted in its production.

Fair & Ethical: Buying fair trade or ethically-made is not only a great opportunity to support businesses that are making a difference, but to share this value with our friends and loved ones.

DIY & Upcycle: Upcycling is the process of transforming waste or unwanted products into new materials or products of better quality. It ultimately prevents waste from ending up in the landfills and allow you to give an item a new life.

Natural Material & Eco-friendly: Synthetic materials like polyester, acrylic or nylon are not biodegradable and end up sitting in landfills for decades to centuries. Buying natural material is a great way to reduce our impact on the environment.

High Quality & Timeless DesignBefore buying any new clothes, ask yourself if you are likely to wear it at least 30 times, if it’s a YES then go ahead, buy it and cherish it! Now, if you want to be able to wear a piece at least 30 times, durability is a key component. It pays to invest in the best quality. Wouldn’t you rather have one amazing dress that will last forever instead of 10 cheap dresses that will look worn out after 2 or 3 laundry cycles?

Clothing Rental: Americans alone produced 15.1 million tons of textile waste in 2013, and around 85% percent of that waste ended up in landfills. Renting clothes is a great alternative. It gives them a longer service life while reducing material use and carbon dioxide emissions.
